Saturday the 30th: Clouds.  Love the clouds, rain, weather.

Sunday the 31st: Poppy.  Got to meet a sweet baby.

Monday the 1st: Holidays.

Tuesday the 2nd: Thanksgiving.  When Katrina suggested that she would roast a turkey and we would be sides, I was all in.  And it was delicious.

Wednesday the 3rd: Walks.  I love this early fall/ late summer weather.  It is so much more pleasant to walk when there is a nice breeze and it’s under 90 degrees.

Thursday the 4th:  School.  Parent orientation for Alma’s school.  Whoa.

First Stop – Huntington Beach

Posted by Carolyn on August 26, 2014 Leave a Comment

aIMG_2833Our first stop on our California Adventure was Huntington Beach to visit with my cousins and aunt.  We are so lucky that we have such fun, generous, funny, and wonderful family in such a beautiful town.  We got in pretty late on Friday, and my cousin Michael, his wife Michelle, and their daughter Avalon had pizza and salad waiting for us.  It was nice to have such a sweet welcome after our day of travel.

aIMG_2791Alma got right to work playing in Avalon’s amazing playroom.  I think she felt right at home, and Avalon did an amazing job sharing all her toys and helping Alma figure out how to use them.  It was great to see the second-cousins getting along right away.  They are almost exactly a year apart.

aIMG_2814The next morning we went down to the pier to have smoothies and bagels.  The kids got to run around in the grass, then we walked to the end of the pier.  It was a cloudy, warm, humid day.  There were lots of surfers to watch from the pier.

aIMG_2821Before we went to California, we had grand plans of going to Disneyland and the San Diego Zoo and a baseball game.  We ended up just hanging around and playing and it was amazing.  We got to relax, catch up, and play.

aIMG_2852It was great seeing the two A’s play together, and I can’t wait until Harriet can run around with them.  She tried… but isn’t quite big enough yet.

aIMG_2855When we were done playing at the pier we went and got our first In-N-Out of the trip.  aIMG_2870

Dear Harriet, On Your First Birthday

Posted by Carolyn on August 22, 2014 5 Comments

IMG_3724Dearest little Hattie,

You are now a year old.  You have been in our world for a year.  A whole year.  It is almost impossible to believe.  This year really has flown by.  It is a blur.  It is a fun, funny, overwhelming blur.

IMG_3729When we decided to have another baby, we had no idea how lucky we were going to be.  We were so lucky to have you as our baby.  No other baby could have added such joy to our lives.  No other baby could have been a better little sister for our Alma.  No other baby could have such such amazing and adorable cheeks.IMG_3732You have grown so much this year.  You started out with just 8 1/2 pounds, now you are nearly 20 pounds!  You have worked hard to grow so much – you have been a good eater from the start, and you love all the new foods we give you.  Your favorites are tomatoes, yogurt, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, pasta, and whatever Alma’s eating.IMG_3736You can walk, but you usually choose to crawl.  I think your record for steps is somewhere around 15.  You still can’t figure out how to stand up when you don’t have something to help pull up on.  I think once you get that figured out, you’ll be running all over the place.  As it is now, you’ll follow Alma around all day.

IMG_3740Right now, you want to be held by me all the time.  If I put you down, you do this terribly sad thing where you fold in half, with your face on the ground, and cry.  If you see me in the room, you pretty much just want me, but as soon as I’m out of your sight, you’re fine with whatever.

IMG_3743You can say ‘da’ for dog, ‘ba’ for ball, ‘ma’ for more, ‘baba’ for Papa or Grandpa, ‘dada’ for Daddy, and that’s about it.  I have yet to hear a ‘mama,’ but that’s okay.

IMG_3752This first year has been busy and hard, but it’s also been the best.  I love to watch you and Alma play.  I love to watch you learn new things.  I love to watch you watch the world.

You are sweet and precious and adventurous and strong.

You are My Hattie, My Harebear, My Hattie-Boo-Boo, My Hattie Bug Bites, My Harriet.

I love you forever, sweet baby girl,

Your Mommy

I’m the Best Mom Ever, and So Are You.

Posted by Carolyn on July 14, 2014 5 Comments

Alma loves Dumbo.  She loves the baby animals in the beginning, and she loves the train.

I was doing something in the same room while she was watching it.  The scene where Jumbo gets her new baby (finally… ummm… that part of her waiting while all the other mamas got their babies was so incredibly heartbreaking and true and horrible) and all her elephant friends are so excited and think her baby is just the cutest and darlingest and cunningest and achoo his ears fly out.

“Is it possible?”  “Isn’t there some mistake?”  “Just look at those E-A-R-S.”  “After all, who cares about her precious little Jumbo?”  “Jumbo, you mean Dumbo!”

Uggg.  The Mommy Wars.  This movie was made long before blogs, and podcasts, and Facebook, and Instagram.

This is the basis for The (so-called) Mommy Wars.  This is a representation of moms not supporting each other.  Jumbo loves her baby and does anything to protect him.  That’s what any and all of us are doing, right?

What is right for our kids?  Breastfeeding, formula, co-sleeping, sleep training, baby carriers, strollers, cloth diapers, disposable, screen time, music lessons, daycare, nannies, stay at home parents, preschool, home school, public school, private school, daily baths, weekly baths, spicy food, ice cream, time outs, time ins, rear facing, front facing?

I have done (or will do) almost all the things on this list.  I don’t feel bad about any of it.  I don’t think you’re a bad mom if you’ve done any of it, or none of it.

We are in this together.  We are all trying to raise and civilize little human beings.

All that being said, it’s so hard not to feel like I am the best mom ever.  When I think of the choices we have made as parents, I am confident.  I know that my choices are right.  But here’s the catch:  my choices are right for me, my family, and most importantly, my kids.

I have to constantly remind myself that what has worked for me and my kids won’t necessarily work for other kids.  When I forget this, that’s when the Mommy War starts to rear its ugly head into my world.

There are things that are important to me that I have to understand just aren’t that important to other families.  For example, it’s important to me that my kids have good table manners.  This means saying please and thank you.  This means using nice words, even when they don’t like the food.  This means trying everything.  This means asking to be excused and putting away their own plates.  This means staying at the table throughout dinner, especially at restaurants.  I have to remind myself that this isn’t universally important.  I also have to remind myself that it is completely a work in progress, and kids – even mine (haha… especially mine) – don’t get it right away.  When I find myself judging parents for the way their kids behave in restaurants, I know that I should give them the benefit of the doubt – maybe they try as hard as they possibly can to instill the same values that I have, but the kids are having a bad day.  Maybe this is their first time ever in a restaurant or their family never gets the chance to sit together for a meal.  Maybe it’s not such a big deal and I should chill out.  I need to remind myself that it doesn’t help anyone, least of all myself or my family, to have a feeling of superiority.

Because in the next moment, my kid will do something awful, or something that other peoples’ children would never ever ever ever do.  Or maybe something I don’t think is that big of a deal.

So, what I’m trying to say is that we should end these wars.  Let’s pull out of the state of constant comparison and competition.  Let’s all just rock our babies to sleep with our trunks, no matter how big their ears are, or how long they can sit at a table, or anything else.

Who’s with me?  And, ummm… how do we start?

At the Beach

Posted by Carolyn on July 8, 2014 1 Comment

Beach 1On Sunday Alma said, “Alma beach?”  Which means “I want to go to the beach.”  Jesse and I looked at each other and shrugged.  Why not?  Let’s do it.  We had been busy working in our garden all weekend, so we deserved it.

Beach 5We packed up and headed out.

Hattie napped on the drive to the ocean.

Beach 4It was a beautiful day.  Sunny, warm, not very windy.  As perfect as a day at the Oregon coast can be

Jesse and Alma flew the kite.  Alma and I played in the water.  Jesse and Alma played in the water.  Hattie ate handfulls of sand.

Beach 3We had clam chowder.

Alma and Hattie both napped on our drive back to the valley.

Perfect.

Maundy Thursday

Posted by andthenthey on April 18, 2014 2 Comments

I wouldn’t say we go to an experimental church.  But, yesterday our church had an experiemental service.  They offered their first annual Maundy Thursday Family Service.  I would call the experiment a success.  The only thing they should change would be saving the nice towels for the adult service.  More on that later.

During the Gospel, there was a full chorus of children singing various versions of the typical child-song.  During the prayers, there was a line dance happening in the back pews.  During the children’s sermon, I counted at least three children who were expertly expressing their emotions.

Then came the main event.

Our lovely priest washed any child’s feet who wanted their feet washed.  There were pitchers of water, a big bowl for the feet, beautifully pristine white towels for drying.

The first spill happened right away, so it was good to get it out of the way.  The first spill was born out of exuberance and happiness. Feet were washed.

More water was spilled.  And more.  More feet were washed.

Then came communion.  When the kids gather around the altar, to be involved in the Great Thanksgiving, it was exciting, as always. Kids were watching the priest.  Kids were sitting together.  Kids were doing suspicious dancing, ending with mad dashes to the restroom.  Kids were refusing to stand with their friends.  Kids were spitting up.  Exciting.

One thing that our church does is this – before the priest says, “The gifts of God, for the people of God,” he hands the bread and wine to the children to hold up.  As he handed the pitcher of wine to Alma and another child, the priest said, “Here you go, Alma.  And Carolyn.  Help them.”  No more spills, here.

Then the service was over.

There were muddy little footprints in the aisle.

All the pristine towels were soaked.

The children had clean feet.

The priest had damp robes.

I felt overwhelmingly happy that this was our church, and this was what our church does.

And it was good.

We Are Seriously Loving This Early Spring Weather

Posted by andthenthey on March 26, 2014 Leave a Comment

Like, seriously loving it.

And Then They - Alma AroundAnd Then They - 4 WilliamsAnd Then They - Alma UpAnd Then They - Alma AwayAnd Then They - Alma Basket HeadAnd Then They - BaskingAnd Then They - BasketingWe really have to take advantage of the spring before the spring takes advantage of us with its relentless rain and pollen.  Our kids are such a great age for playing these days.  Alma can almost independently play at a playground.  Harriet is content to roll around on a blanket, or nap in the Ergo.

These photos are from earlier this week.  We are now in the middle of a 10 day rain storm.  Such is life in a Willamette Valley spring.

I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Well, She’s Two.

Posted by andthenthey on March 18, 2014 2 Comments

Here’s our pre-dinner conversation with Alma, March 18th, 2014:

Alma: *trips over toy boat* AAAAAWWWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!
Dad: Oh no!  You’re okay!  Do you need a hug?
Alma: NOOOOO!!!! AWWWAAAAAAAAAHHHHH  MOMMYYYYYYYY!
Dad: Mom’s cooking dinner right now, but I can give you a hug.
Alma: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYY!! AWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! *walks sadly into kitchen*
Mom: Uh oh!  Did you fall down?  Are you okay? (she is clearly okay)
Alma: NOOOO WWAAAAWWWWWHHHAHHHAAAAHHH!
Mom:  I can pick you up in just a second.  I need to finish this right now.
Alma: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Mom:  Want to look in the oven?  See what’s cooking?
Alma: WWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
Mom:  Can you tell me what you want?
Alma: WWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Mom:  Do you want me to pick you up?
Alma: WAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
.
.
.
This continues in roughly the same way for about 10 minutes, with both mom and dad suggesting things to help Alma cheer up.
Mom: Okay, dinner’s ready! (this is usually very motivating for Alma)
Alma: NOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
Mom:  Okay.  You can either eat with our family, or sit on the stairs until you calm down enough to join us.
Alma: WAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Dad: So, how was your day?
Alma: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
Mom:  It was pretty good!  I’m really…
Alma: *tries to climb into mom’s lap* WAAAAAA!
Mom: *ignores climbing puddle of a toddler*… tired.  How was your day?
Alma: AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW-AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH-HHHHHHAAA-AAAWWWWWWWW-WWWAAAAAAAAAH!!!!  All done. *climbs into chair and starts eating dinner*

End scene. Who is this creature we lovingly invited into our home, and our dining room?
