A Letter of Admiration for Middle Schoolers

Posted by Carolyn on February 23, 2015 5 Comments

20141020_083044Dear Middle Schoolers,

I think you’re awesome.  I know that you might not care what I – a stay at home mom/ substitute teacher – think of you, but I just wanted to say it.  I get to spend most of my days with my two little tiny daughters.  I love my job at home with them.  But, I also get to spend a few days a week with you guys.  I have to tell you that I look forward to these days so much.  That is because you’re awesome.  You are caring.  You are bright.  You are funny. You are going to change our world.

20140418_142103When I get to step into your classroom, your turf, you welcome me with such enthusiasm. It is such a joy to walk down your halls and hear you tell me how happy you are that I’m there, or ask whose room I’m in.  You make me feel like part of the team, part of your team.  I love when you ask me about my kids, or tell me you saw me somewhere.  I love seeing you out in public, and seeing the moment of recognition on your face.  Seeing a teacher in public is strange (I remember), and I’m always so impressed with you when you take the time to say hello, or introduce me to your parents.

20140417_104931Having you care about me warms my heart, but seeing you care about each other makes it soar.  Bullying is a big thing in middle schools.  Always has been, probably always will be.  You are trying on different personalities, some good, some bad.  You will make mistakes and treat others poorly, and most of you will learn from it.  This is a time in your lives that you should be given some space to make these mistakes, after all, you are still children.  But, you are also becoming adults, so after you’ve made your mistakes, it is time to learn how to own up to them, and figure out how to make things right.

20140416_145602Every time I’m in your schools, I see you do this.  I see someone care for someone else. You are learning so much more than the Common Core, or the state standards.  You are learning how to be adults.

20140408_133406I love subbing in your schools, because it’s so much fun to see you learn.  You are at an age that you can read a novel, or a memoir, or an article, and have a well-informed discussion about the texts.  You are thinking on a deep level, adding inquiry to your conversations.  Your brains are soaking things up, your hearts are pumping ideas, and your mouths are sharing your ideas, opinions, questions, and realizations with each other.  You are all so bright, and intelligent, and you are all trying so hard.  And that’s what’s important.

20140320_134812I have so much fun when I am in your classrooms.  You constantly crack me up, even when I know I should be serious.  You are at such a fun age, an age when you really develop a sense of humor, and timing.  I know that I can give you a hard time sometimes, and that you will give it right back to me.  You are incredibly random, and that cracks me up.  You make of strange names for me, for no other reason than to let me know that you think I’m cool.

20141106_121005I have heard that some adults don’t really like you.  They think you’re rude, uninterested, self-absorbed, disrespectful.  I think they just don’t get you.  They don’t understand that you are becoming who you are, and that takes a bit of work.  I see that you are interested, and interesting.  If there is a cause that you believe in, I guarantee that there is no one who will work harder to achieve a goal than you will.  You have the tenacity, the motivation, and the energy of a hundred adults when it comes to something you believe in.  You seriously could change the world.   You seriously will.

20140501_123654I wanted you to know that, for whatever it’s worth, you are respected, admired, encouraged, and loved.  I think you’re awesome. I can’t wait to see what you do with our little world.

20140425_130224In Gratitude,

Mrs. Williams (or Carolyn)

Sometimes You Just Say Yes

Posted by Carolyn on February 16, 2015 Leave a Comment

IMG_6225Alma kept talking about painting all day yesterday.  When the time was right, I went out to the sunroom, set up her watercolors and paper, and she said, “No! I want to paint the fence!”  I have no idea where she got this idea, but I thought it was a good one.  Why not?  Sometimes you just say ‘yes!’

IMG_6184 IMG_6185 IMG_6188 IMG_6190We started with finger paints and they weren’t working very well, so we switched to tempera.  At one point Jesse came out and asked if it would wash off.  I just shrugged.  Who cares?  It’s art.  It’s memories.  It’s beautiful.  It’s yes.  And truth be told: we’ll probably have to replace this fence this spring anyway.

All the pink spots are lions.  She told me that.  Then she said, “Oh!  One’s falling down!”  Do you see it?IMG_6222 IMG_6224

Gratitude – One Little Word – 2014

Posted by Carolyn on December 30, 2014 3 Comments

365 Days of GratitudeMy One Little Word for 2014 was Gratitude.  As I said in my post from last December, I’ve done a One Little Word, but it’s never been incredibly meaningful.  Until 2014, when my One Little Word was GRATITUDE.

I was very intentional with my word.  I thought about it every single day.  I wrote down what I was grateful for every single day.  The wordle above shows all those words.  The cool thing about wordle, is that the frequency of each word increases the size of the word in the final word cloud.

So, clearly, in 2014 I was most grateful for my friends.  Followed closely by my mom, my dad, Jesse, family, and home.  Then, a little smaller is Harriet, Alma, church, Eugene, alone, parents, and Autumn.  Isn’t that just lovely?

Looking back at my list of words, I am a little surprised that Jesse isn’t bigger.  I think this is because it’s obvious that I’m grateful for Jesse (and Harriet and Alma).  I probably could have filled a whole year writing down just their names, but I was trying to go beyond the obvious and think about what I was seriously, truly grateful for each day.

That was usually special time with friends – time that rejuvenated me – time that expanded me – time that filled me.  I can still feel that feeling of gratitude that comes with good time with good friends.  I’m not sure that I had ever paid much attention to the enormous amount of gratitude I felt for my friends.

Or my parents.  Sure, I have always appreciated them.  They are amazing people.  I was lucky to have been raised by my mom and dad (and my step-dad and step-mom).  This year, it is clear that they do a lot for me and my family.  They watch my kids (and love them in the process) so I can work, or get things done that would be difficult with 2 toddlers in tow.  They feed us food.  They keep us company.  They have ideas for me, and encourage me.

I have loved 2014.  I have really loved giving thanks every single day.  I think I’ll miss it.  I’ll always be grateful.

It’s kind of the Alma show here, but it’s hard to photograph a baby in an Ergo on my back…

Saturday the 30th: Clouds.  Love the clouds, rain, weather.

Sunday the 31st: Poppy.  Got to meet a sweet baby.

Monday the 1st: Holidays.

Tuesday the 2nd: Thanksgiving.  When Katrina suggested that she would roast a turkey and we would be sides, I was all in.  And it was delicious.

Wednesday the 3rd: Walks.  I love this early fall/ late summer weather.  It is so much more pleasant to walk when there is a nice breeze and it’s under 90 degrees.

Thursday the 4th:  School.  Parent orientation for Alma’s school.  Whoa.

Coronado, the Enchanted Vacation

Posted by Carolyn on September 1, 2014 2 Comments

aIMG_3019We got to spend a couple days in Coronado with some of our favorite friends.  Tyler and Leia were amazing to invite us to spend some time at Tyler’s dad’s house.  We thought it would be fun, but had no idea how wonderfully beautiful it would be.  The house is literally across the street from an incredible beach.

aIMG_3114And down the street from the beautiful Hotel Del Corondo.

aIMG_3062Did I mention we were there for the Super Moon?

aIMG_3071We spent two nights, and just spent our time relaxing.  We had grand plans of seeing the pandas, but didn’t.  We spent our time on the beach, in the yard, having drinks, eating amazing cheese sauce, playing, and just enjoying everything.aIMG_2986 aIMG_3015 aIMG_3025 aIMG_3036 aIMG_3051 aIMG_3085 aIMG_3105 aIMG_3130Thank you Leia and Tyler!  And Mark and Jenny!  Let’s do it again!

First Stop – Huntington Beach

Posted by Carolyn on August 26, 2014 Leave a Comment

aIMG_2833Our first stop on our California Adventure was Huntington Beach to visit with my cousins and aunt.  We are so lucky that we have such fun, generous, funny, and wonderful family in such a beautiful town.  We got in pretty late on Friday, and my cousin Michael, his wife Michelle, and their daughter Avalon had pizza and salad waiting for us.  It was nice to have such a sweet welcome after our day of travel.

aIMG_2791Alma got right to work playing in Avalon’s amazing playroom.  I think she felt right at home, and Avalon did an amazing job sharing all her toys and helping Alma figure out how to use them.  It was great to see the second-cousins getting along right away.  They are almost exactly a year apart.

aIMG_2814The next morning we went down to the pier to have smoothies and bagels.  The kids got to run around in the grass, then we walked to the end of the pier.  It was a cloudy, warm, humid day.  There were lots of surfers to watch from the pier.

aIMG_2821Before we went to California, we had grand plans of going to Disneyland and the San Diego Zoo and a baseball game.  We ended up just hanging around and playing and it was amazing.  We got to relax, catch up, and play.

aIMG_2852It was great seeing the two A’s play together, and I can’t wait until Harriet can run around with them.  She tried… but isn’t quite big enough yet.

aIMG_2855When we were done playing at the pier we went and got our first In-N-Out of the trip.  aIMG_2870

Dear Harriet, On Your First Birthday

Posted by Carolyn on August 22, 2014 5 Comments

IMG_3724Dearest little Hattie,

You are now a year old.  You have been in our world for a year.  A whole year.  It is almost impossible to believe.  This year really has flown by.  It is a blur.  It is a fun, funny, overwhelming blur.

IMG_3729When we decided to have another baby, we had no idea how lucky we were going to be.  We were so lucky to have you as our baby.  No other baby could have added such joy to our lives.  No other baby could have been a better little sister for our Alma.  No other baby could have such such amazing and adorable cheeks.IMG_3732You have grown so much this year.  You started out with just 8 1/2 pounds, now you are nearly 20 pounds!  You have worked hard to grow so much – you have been a good eater from the start, and you love all the new foods we give you.  Your favorites are tomatoes, yogurt, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, pasta, and whatever Alma’s eating.IMG_3736You can walk, but you usually choose to crawl.  I think your record for steps is somewhere around 15.  You still can’t figure out how to stand up when you don’t have something to help pull up on.  I think once you get that figured out, you’ll be running all over the place.  As it is now, you’ll follow Alma around all day.

IMG_3740Right now, you want to be held by me all the time.  If I put you down, you do this terribly sad thing where you fold in half, with your face on the ground, and cry.  If you see me in the room, you pretty much just want me, but as soon as I’m out of your sight, you’re fine with whatever.

IMG_3743You can say ‘da’ for dog, ‘ba’ for ball, ‘ma’ for more, ‘baba’ for Papa or Grandpa, ‘dada’ for Daddy, and that’s about it.  I have yet to hear a ‘mama,’ but that’s okay.

IMG_3752This first year has been busy and hard, but it’s also been the best.  I love to watch you and Alma play.  I love to watch you learn new things.  I love to watch you watch the world.

You are sweet and precious and adventurous and strong.

You are My Hattie, My Harebear, My Hattie-Boo-Boo, My Hattie Bug Bites, My Harriet.

I love you forever, sweet baby girl,

Your Mommy
