Winter To Do List, 2016

Posted by Carolyn on December 30, 2015 Leave a Comment

Here’s my list of things to do this winter.  Many of the things on this list are from my 35 Things To Do Before 35 list, since there are still a lot of things on that list that aren’t checked off.

Anyone want to play along?

Here are some photos from last winter to get you in the mood!

  1. Go to the gym at least 30 times.
  2. Create a New Years signature cocktail.
  3. Sew new spring dresses for the girls.
  4. Go to an art opening.
  5. Work on my Tula Pink quilt.
  6. See The Last Five Years with Evynne in the lead role.
  7. See The Book of Mormon on tour.  Already have tickets!
  8. Get a massage.
  9. Do another Whole30.
  10. Try acupuncture.
  11. Try some new recipes from my Azerbaijani cookbook.
  12. Have a creative retreat.
  13. Get back on my daily chore schedule.
  14. Go on some hikes.
  15. Sew cushion for the hearth.
  16. Get paint estimates.
  17. Take a class.
  18. Finish at least one of my classes to renew my teaching license.
  19. Plant an amazing garden.
  20. Create some concrete, tangible ways to interact with my One Little Word for 2016 (to be announced soon!).

Santa 2015

Santa 2015

This is our fourth year visiting Santa at the Festival of Trees.  It’s great to see him every year.  This year we went with Rory and Poppy, and all four kids were (mostly) happy to go say hello.  They were a little nervous, but there were absolutely no tears.  I’m sure the candy canes helped.

Alma told Santa she wants a unicorn with a glowing horn (anyone have any ideas for this?).  Rory told Santa he wants a Poli.  Harriet and Poppy didn’t tell Santa what they want.

Merry Christmas!

december 2015: currently

Posted by Carolyn on December 3, 2015 Leave a Comment

reading A Game of Thrones, finally.

understanding so much more about the characters.

wondering when Patrick Rothfuss will finish his next book.

feeling like a nerd, talking about all this fantasy fiction.

embracing it.

loving the nine hours a week I get to myself when the girls are in school.

listening to the Moldy Peaches’ song “Anyone Else But You” on repeat when the kids are in the car.

getting the Moldy Peaches’ song “Anyone Else But You” stuck in my head.

listening to anything but the Moldy Peaches’ song “Anyone Else But You” whenever I can.

choosing Christmas music as much as I can.

scrapbooking for the first time in six years.

enjoying the process and adventure of doing a December Daily album.

thinking about how I’m spending my days.

photographing all the moments.

thinking about all the stories.

planning for the Goodness Gnomes to show up.

slowing down because it’s Advent.

taking time to look at things on my walks.

preparing for Christmas.

loving my husband and his rockstar surprises.

feeling happy and content and warm.

Another Winter Storm

Posted by andthenthey on February 8, 2014 Leave a Comment

Here in the Willamette Valley, we don’t usually get much snow.  Maybe a dusting a couple times a year.  Somethings none at all.  We already had a big snow storm that hung around for a few days back in December. (Photos of this here and here)  This week brought another winter storm system.

We woke up on Thursday morning to a couple inches of snow on the ground.  It kept on dumping snow all day and we ended up with about 5 inches.  Alma, unfortunately, was sick, so we didn’t get to go play in the snow this time.  By the end of Friday, we had 8 inches!  Luckily, Alma was feeling better by the time Jesse got home from work, so we went for a quick walk in the snow.

While we were walking, the snow turned into freezing rain.  The freezing rain kept up all night.  We could hear it pattering on our window.  In the morning there was a quarter inch of ice covering everything.  The freezing rain is still falling, and coating everything with a thick layer of ice.  Outside, you can hear tree branches creaking and cracking.  I’ve heard stories of fallen trees and power outages all over town.

The freezing rain can cause some spooky things, but it’s also really beautiful.  I have gone out a couple times already to take some photos.

Here’s our weeping cherry tree at 8:00 am:

If God said, ‘Rumi pay homage to everything that has helped you enter my arms,’ there would not be one experience of my life, not one thought, not one feeling, nor any act, I would not bow to. -Rumi
